KNOCKOUT - BECAUSE WE’RE TRAVELING ON VACATION BED BUGS ARE GOING BACK TO WORK
June 9th, 2011

I’ve been hearing and reading advertisements from a few “other” pest control companies implying that BED BUGS are a spring and summer time pest. Well that’s not true. It is true that BED BUGS have sort of seasonal outbreaks, but that has more to do with the movement and activity of people rather than the change of the seasonal weather.
Let me explain. Right now more people are reporting outbreaks/infestations of Bed Bugs NOT because it’s spring and the weather is warmer, but because in the spring there is a shift and movement of the general population. College students moving back home from college dorms. There are more leisure travelers enjoying warmer days visiting popular spring & summer tourist destinations and are staying at hotels. It’s not a spring or seasonal warmth thing - it’s a people on the move thing. In the summer kids will be going off to camp and the summer traveling is going to be in high gear. Bed Bugs who have remained dormant in camp ground sleeping quarters and cots will renew their feeding frenzy. The more people travel the greater the transfer of Bed Bugs from one location to infest a new location.
This periodic increase happens several times a year – soon after kids settle down in college dorm rooms; as children’s belongings mingle in classrooms and libraries; in the busy shopping season just before and after the winter holidays; in crowed theaters – especially in colder weather when bulky clothing makes it easier for a Bed Bug to hitchhike onto without being noticed.
So you see, Bed Bugs aren’t seasonal in the usual sense of the word, Bed Bugs just take advantage of PEOPLE as a opportunistic mode of transportation – thereby spreading them to new and more locations – making an isolated infestation into a period of apparent epidemic.
That is why during these times, the public at large has to be more vigilant in preventing bed bug infestation. At the first signs of any Bed Bug activity, a HOME and BUSINESS OWNER MUST call a professional to treat for, eradicate, exterminate, kill… whatever term you want to use… to rid your residential or commercial property of Bed Bugs.
This is now of even greater concern that Bed Bugs, who we already know carry many diseases and microscopic worms that could harm people and animals but have not yet been shown to transfer these harmful diseases to people… is now in question. Studies are underway to further investigate a CDC, Center for Disease Control article, that Bed Bugs might in some cases transmit MRSA to people. I suggest you read my BLOG entry of MAY 14th, 2011 – BED BUG NEWS… NEWS THAT MIGHT CHANGE EVERYTHING. Bed Bugs, these almost indestructible blood sucking parasites, carrying a dangerous bacteria that has shown to be equally difficult to destroy with antibiotics would truly be a MARRIAGE MADE IN HELL. Don’t mess around by trying to deal with Bed Bugs by yourself.
