KNOCKOUT – ‘Tis The Season for Returns – Kill Bed Bugs BEFORE they Establish Themselves in Your Home or Store.
December 6, 2010
SOMEBODY purchases an item of clothing as a gift or for themselves; somebody is going to take it home and try it on. Ten to one it’ll be in their bedroom. They’ll toss the bags on the bed and look at themselves in a mirror. If they don’t like the look or the fit; they’ll take it off where it’ll drop to the carpeted floor and they’ll toss it onto the bed. Maybe it’ll sit on the bed for an hour or so before its put back into the bag to be returned to the store. Maybe the bag will sit on the floor in the bedroom for a couple of days before they have a chance to go back to the store and return or exchange it. A store clerk will take the clothes back and toss it in a bin where it’ll sit until another clerk puts it back on a hanger and back on a sales rack.
YOU go to that store and purchase that very same item and take it home; toss the bag on your bed and try it on. It fits and looks great. You put it in your closet. You throw the empty bag in the trash pail in your bedroom.
Wow. What a deal! A two for one special. You not only brought home a great outfit, but BED BUGS too!
A suggestion to PURCHASERS – whenever you buy clothing from a store, throw it into the drier for 20 minutes on high. The intense DRY heat won’t shrink anything because it’s not wet. But the heat will kill any BED BUGS that may have hitched a ride on the garment from a return. Live in an apartment without easy access to a clothes drier? Buy a HOT BOX; it’s worth the investment when you buy clothes or just to drop your stuff in after riding the subway, bus, or your suitcase (still full with all your stuff), after staying at a hotel or even visiting family and friends.
A suggestion to RETAILERS – buy a HOT BOX for all of your stores and place them behind the counter or in the backroom. You can toss returned garments, (bag and all), into the HOT BOX and kill any BED BUGS that may have hitched a ride from someone’s home into your store. Don’t think it’s worth the time or investment? Just ask HOLLISTER, BLOOMINGDALES, MACY’S, and a row of high end trendy stores on Rodeo Drive.
There is NO guarantee that anyone or anyplace can avoid getting BED BUGS… but there are common sense preventative measures one can take to avoid the problem and the cost of getting rid of them. Remember do your best to be on the lookout and avoid letting them into your HOME or PLACE OF BUSINESS and if you do get BED BUGS… call an experienced & professional pest control company, like Knockout Pest Control, to deal with a Bed Bug problem. Bed Bug infestation is a serious problem to get rid of; and it takes a trained professional to kill Bed Bugs and treat the problem and monitor the after effects of treatment to make sure the problem is solved.

There was a news story last week about a charity in NJ that was asking for used coats and was concerned about getting coats donated that may have bed bugs. I think these bed bug hot boxes would be a great idea for them to buy and treat all of the used clothes that they get donated. I wasn’t worried about getting bed bugs until I read this blog TIS THE SEASON. From now on I’m going to throw all my purchases, (that I’m going to keep), in the drier; but would that be too late? After I tried them on and all?

A great idea. Every retail clothing store should have a bed bug hot box behind the counter for clothing returns. Stores can even put a sign up, assuring customers that all of the clothes that were returned have been treated for bed bugs before being put back on the racks for resale. New York City should pass a law requiring stores to have them. As a matter of fact it should be a law in all of New York State. Why isn’t it one now? That is something the government can do to address the growing bed bug problem. Making laws is what they do best.
I’m interested in your bedbug hotbox. Is it Packtite or it another brand?
Although I haven’t read much in the news lately about bed bugs I found one on a jacket I recently purchased. I can’t tell you how freaked out I was. I returned the jacket to the store with the crushed bug. They were more than understanding and handled the entire situation extremely well. They seemed to be as freaked out as me and I was satisfied enough with their explanation that since the garment was on the clearance rack it probably was a returned item, so I’m not going to mention the store. I did however tell them about this blog and suggested they call you and invest in one of your bed bug hot boxes to place all returned items like this blog suggests. I have used Knockout Pest in the past for a termite inspection so I’m very familiar with your blog postings. Keep it up, although I can’t say I’m a regular reader, (I’m just not obsessed with reading about bugs), but I found making a referral to your bed bug blog very useful.
