KNOCKOUT – FREEZING BED BUGS – THE CRYONITE EFFECT - Exterminating Bed Bugs in HOTELS & MOTELS
February 11, 2011
Once again, one of the most effective methods of killing bed bugs is almost ignored in an article about the treatments for bed bug infestations. In the New York State HOSPITALITY & TOURISM Association publication FOCUS, Winter 2011 – Volume 21, Number 1, there is a feature story called: How to Effectively Combat Bed Bugs. The article only fleetingly refers to “freezing techniques” and then exalts thermal remediation using heat, and then the goes into the old school mattress and box spring barrier encasements, and blocking off of infected rooms and those being treated.
The article itself notes that bed bugs can survive in temperatures from, “almost freezing to almost 113 degrees Fahrenheit”. It then promotes a heat treatment methodology that works by bringing a room’s temperature to 120 degrees, only a few degrees warmer that the bed bugs survival window and doesn’t address the bed bugs ability to just escape into another room. Heat remediation also takes many hours to reach the necessary temperature levels, and with its heat generation units and tenting and taping, this method is by no means a discreet, “covert” treatment method.
Killing bed bugs with a freezing method, using a Cryonite system, instantaneously crystallizes and kills bed bugs with ”penetrating” temperatures of 108 degrees below zero Fahrenheit, and freezing is a very discreet method. Best of all, since Cryonite uses specialized micro ice particle technology, which affords it extremely deep penetration into all fabric surfaces and behind fixed hard surfaces, joints, interior walls, electrical outlets, upholstered furniture, and is ideal on wall-to-wall carpeting and spaces where floors and walls meet. Freezing kills bed bug in all life stages from adults to nymphs to eggs. And since the CO2 produced by the Cryonite system contains NO hydrogen molecules, the icy spray “snow” can be applied directly into electrical wall outlets and electronic devises without causing any electrical problem. The snow is dry, leaves NO residue, and dissipates in seconds. It leaves NO odor. And since it is 100% pesticide free, and has a technical purity rating of 99.5 percent pure, it is safe to use in areas with pets and plants, and where food is prepared and served. Freezing is: Fast. Effective. Resistant proof. Poison Free. Is a Green technology. Is residue free. It’s dry. It’s Discreet. And best of all, since bed bugs are instantly eliminated, guests can check into the room as soon as the pest control technician leaves and the room is remade. The Hotel does NOT lose revenue.
So while KNOCKOUT PEST CONTROL agrees with the articles promotion of having hotel staff be vigilant in looking out for bed bugs, and the effectiveness of using a Certified Bed Bug Detection Dog to locate areas of infestation, and the use of encasements, (when applicable), I would strongly suggest that hotel and motel management call a Professional Pest Control company that is using Freezing Technology to eliminate bed bug infestations. It might be of interest to pass along that exterminating bed bugs using a freezing technology also works on other insects like roaches and bed mites.
We would also recommend that if a hotel or motel has had several bouts of bed bugs introduced into their facility that they investigate purchasing Active Guard Mattress & Box Spring liners, NOT encasements, but an “active” proactive method of killing bed bugs before they are ever able to establish themselves in a living/sleeping space.
I hope this blog helps businesses in the hospitality industry have a better understanding of the freezing technology and its extraordinary advantages in bed bug extermination.

I am in charge of the engineering/housekeeping of a mid-size motel off of a major highway in PA. We get dozens of one night stays. And with so many transient guests we do get bed bugs. I have had to close a room for days to resolve the problem and it severely cuts into our revenue. This cryonite system, if it does what you say it does sounds like a life saver. I want to express my thanks to YOU by posting this comment to say thank you. Your business doesn’t serve my area but the information is invaluable. I have made a few calls and located a company in my area that offers cryonite. Thank you.
