Rats are abundant in the New York area, in NYC alone it is estimated that there is a 12 to 1, rats to people,ratio, [as estimated NYC DOH 2002] . The primary rat is the Norway Rat, also known as the Brown Rat , or Sewer Rat. These Rats can range anywhere ½ to one pound and are approximately 13 to 18 inches long, from nose to tail, although there are reports of some slightly larger. Rats have course fur and are basically brown with a yellowish grey underbelly. Mature Rats, 3 months or older, breed primarily in the spring and fall with litters of 6 to 12 Rat pups.
