Rodent Problem:
Where to Look For a Mouse in the House
or a Rat Infestation

The first step in getting rid of mice or exterminating rats is to find where they are hiding and how they got into your property in the first place. Hiring a professional who knows what to look for and where can save you time and aggravation. In the meantime, these checklists can help you determine if you have a rat problem or a mouse in the house.

House Mouse Hiding Places
• Dark quiet corners
• Inside and under cabinets—even inside food boxes and bags
• Inside and under upholstery
• Inside furniture—they love cluttered drawers
• Inside and around kitchen appliance, inside small appliances and in and around large appliances
• Inside walls and ceilings—especially if there is a heat source nearby
• On top of foundation walls and in crawl spaces
• Inside shoes and boxes in closets
• Cluttered attics, garages, crawlspaces and storage sheds
• Under the water heater
• Where pipes and wires enter and exit a structure

Rats Nest Sites
• In basements—sump pumps with water are ideal
• In wood piles
• Near dog beds and pens
• Around pet food storage areas
• In or near garbage
• Inside walls
• In voids near foundations
• Under decks and floors
• Under slab walkways and in tunnels around bushes and trees
• Attics
• Above false ceilings
• Where pipes and wires enter and exit a structure
• In vents
